Radiator surface area is the single biggest factor in how quiet and cool your custom loop will run. Undersizing forces high fan speeds; oversizing wastes case space and budget.
Add the TDP of every water-cooled component. A modern CPU and GPU can easily push 700W under load, which is the real number your radiators need to dissipate.
A common baseline is 120mm of radiator per 100–150W of heat for quiet operation. Denser radiators need higher static pressure fans, while thin radiators run well on low RPM airflow.
Two 360mm radiators are often better than one thick 480mm in tight cases. Push-pull, ambient temperature, and fan curves matter as much as raw radiator size.
